In Canada, approximately one-third of parents prefer to personally care for their children at home but 74.9% of these parents report difficulties in balancing childcare, schooling, and work.
A substantial portion of their time is spent on unpaid work such as household chores, childcare, transportation, all adding to their mental workload. Managing children's behavior and ensuring their academic success are major sources of stress for these primary care providers.
KeedoeTime is a play-based learning platform for preschool-aged children, offering personalized, age-appropriate activities that foster skill development and support educators in creating engaging, immersive learning experiences.
Discover
To better understand the target audience, I conducted an online survey with 20 respondents, including both working and stay-at-home parents of children under 12, as well as educators with direct experience in teaching or caring for children. This approach helped uncover key pain points and challenges, providing a clear understanding of the audience’s needs and guiding future strategies.
Performed competitive analysis of learning platforms, playdate apps, and activity websites to define KeedoeTime’s unique value proposition - focusing on providing play-based learning activities but still prioritizing social and immersive interaction. This emphasizes a balanced approach that will nurture the overall cognitive development needs of children.
Mapped customer journeys to uncover pain points and guide feature development.
Ideate & Validate
I created a low-fidelity prototype based on research insights and conducted moderated usability testing with parents, teachers, and early childhood educators to refine the product design and improve the user experience.
This process led to three key insights:
Alignment with User Expectations: Renaming buttons and maintaining consistent terminology will improve clarity and ensure users find the platform intuitive.
Enhanced Functionality and Accessibility: Improving search functionality and repositioning key buttons will streamline navigation and make task completion more efficient.
Tailored User Experience: Implementing user onboarding and enhancing the visibility of community features will foster personalization and increase social engagement.
Additionally, I conducted unmoderated heuristic testing to ensure alignment with design principles. All of these process has contributed to design iterations and prototype enhancement.
Execute
To efficiently manage and track feature additions for the prototype, I used a Kanban board in Trello and developed detailed user stories to capture the specific needs and goals of our users, guiding the prioritization process. This approach allowed me to focus on features essential for the minimum viable product (MVP), ensuring a streamlined learning and planning journey for users while delivering engaging, enjoyable activities for children.

UX/UI Design & Prototyping
As this product remains in the development stage as part of a thesis project, several key reflections, forecasts, and study results can be derived from the research and planning phases:
Data Driven Decisions
This study highlighted the importance of thorough market research in shaping KeedoeTime's data-driven strategy. Analyzing research insights uncovered key user needs, validating the demand for a platform that addresses the real challenges faced by primary care providers.
BOPPPS Model in Product Design
Since KeedoeTime is a learning platform, including a pedagogy model in product design is essential to ensure users are informed of the learning outcomes per activity.
Revenue and Conversion Predictions
Designing the product requires balancing innovative features with profitability. It’s crucial to consider multiple revenue streams that are beneficial for the business but not disruptive to the user's expereince.
